Women Composers - SYROS INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL

Long confined to the margins of music history, women composers — past and present — are gradually reclaiming their rightful place on concert stages. This programme brings together four singular figures, each with a rich and distinctive musical voice.

Pauline Viardot — renowned singer, composer, and student of Franz Liszt, and a close associate of Frédéric Chopin — stands as one of the most fascinating artistic personalities of the 19th century. Alongside her, Germaine Tailleferre, the only female member of Les Six, asserts herself through the originality of her musical language, the refinement of her harmonic writing, and the diversity of styles she explored.

The second half of the concert creates a dialogue between two contemporary voices: Kaija Saariaho, a major figure in 20th- and 21st-century music, and Sofia Avramidou, composer-in-residence at the festival, whose works will be performed in close collaboration with the participating artists.
